Product Review: Josie Maran Argan Cleansing Oil

I recently posted about double cleansing as a beauty ritual. I mentioned that my double cleansing couple was Michael Todd's Honey & Oat Cleanser and Josie Maran's Argan Cleansing Oil. I purchased the cleansing oil a couple weeks ago during Sephora's VIB 15% off promotion, and so I'm ready to give it a review!

Josie Maran Argan Cleansing Oil (Model Citizen Limited Edition), 6oz
Price: $32

Argania Spinosa Kernel (Argan) Oil, Polysorbate-20, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Peel Oil, Tocopherol

Rub three to four pumps into dry hands and apply evenly over dry face. Wet the face and massage into a rich milk. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water and pat dry with a towel.

Texture of the oil.

As you can see, I purchased the Model Citizen limited edition version. The difference between the original and LE is the colorful label, a black versus a white pump, and the LE is African rooibos scented. The first time I used the cleansing oil was actually from a sample of the original cleansing oil, and I actually prefer the original scent better (fresh and citrusy). Contrary to what it looks like in the bottle, the texture of the oil when it's on your skin is very thick and gooey. Like most other cleansing oils, you put the oil directly on your dry face. The product is golden amber in color, and the product is dispensed out from a black pump. The pump is really great because it pumps out just the right amount of product per pump. You can also close the pump by turning it to prevent accidental spills. The directions say you're supposed to use three to four pumps per cleanse, I use around two to three pumps and find that it's sufficient.

When rubbed onto the skin, it immediately starts to melt away your makeup. I usually take off my makeup first using a makeup wipe, but in order to really test the oil I used it on a fully made up face in anticipation for this review. I've really been into wearing cat eye makeup lately, and all that heavy black eyeliner immediately disappears after only a couple swipes of the oil over my eyelid. I really give my face a good massage when I cleanse with the oil. Near the end, I add a little bit of water to my face to emulsify it. However, it doesn't actually turn into a milk like the directions says it would. Instead it just slightly thins out the oil so that it's easier to manipulate and makes for a shorter rinse off. When it's fully rinsed off my face, my skin feels soft and not stripped of moisture.

With all that being said, I have the slightest unfortunate feeling that the oil might be breaking me out. I'm not positive however since there have been other factors contributing to my latest breakouts, but it could be exacerbating the breakouts because my skin somewhat calmed down when I stopped using the cleansing oil every other day and reduced it to 1-2 times a week.

Makeup swatches. I chose to swatch products that claimed to be long wearing.

After a couple of rubs.

After more rubs.

Wiped clean with a cotton pad soaked in Bioderma.

TL;DR Version

You should purchase this product if:
  • You want to add a cleansing oil to your beauty cabinet.
  • You want an all organic cleansing oil.
  • You want a very easy and fast way to remove heavy eye makeup.
  • You want to remove your makeup without stripping away natural oils from your skin.

You should not purchase this product if:
  • Your skin is sensitive or prone to breaking out (as I mentioned above I'm not positive it's the main culprit but I'm being cautious. The reviewers at Sephora seem to have similar experiences)

Concluding Remarks

The limited edition and the original cleansing oil is available at Sephora. If you don't want to buy the full 6oz size, there is also small travel/sample size also available. If you want to see more options for cleansing oils, check out my post on double cleansing.

Happy cleansing!!
