Product Review: H&M Beauty Products

I finally got around to purchasing a couple items from H&M's new massive 700+ beauty and makeup line that just recently launched. For a brand that is as pervasive and common as Starbucks, it's actually kind of hard to find stores that carry their makeup and beauty line! Furthermore, I found out that the only store in all of New York City that carries the entire line is H&M's (new) Flagship Store in Herald Square. Unfortunately for me, I was at their prior flagship store on 5th Avenue which only carried the makeup line - and not all of it I might add. But enough ranting! Let's get on with the review!

As you can see from above, I purchased three items: a nail polish, cream eyeshadow, and a powder blush. There were a ton of polish colors to choose from, but none of them really struck my fancy. I only purchased a bottle just so I can try out their formula. I did realize that after coming home and cross-referencing online, that the H&M on 5th Avenue didn't have all of the nail polish colors available for purchase. The cream eyeshadow selection was small, and there were only around 5-6 total colors to choose from, so of course being me I chose the neutral brown shadow because it's the most versatile. However, the blush selection was amazing. There were so many to choose from! After swatching around 5-6 different shades, I ended up choosing a shade that I thought was really wearable and natural.

Pure Radiance Powder Blusher in Cameo Pink

Price: $9.99

A pressed powder blush that blends easily for a natural, healthy-looking glow. The sheer formula offers buildable coverage and comes in an array of fashion shades to match any skin tone. 0.18 oz. How to use: Apply on its own, or after face primer and powder.

I absolutely love the color of this blush. It's the perfect shade of flushed pink. It's such a finely milled powder that it feels creamy when you touch it. I will say that the texture of the powder slightly backfired when you go to apply it with a fluffy blush brush - the powder got everywhere! Instead of swirling the brush, I realized that you have to swipe it up or down or left to right to avoid a messy result. Color payoff is good and easily applied on the cheeks. My only qualm is the packaging. Although I adore black and gold and think it's chic, it feels really cheap and flimsy. I wouldn't recommend putting this in your purse or even a makeup bag with other heavy glass items as I think the blush would shatter easily. Perhaps next time I'll consider purchasing one of their cream blushes.

Colour Essence Eye Cream in Dauphine Truffle
Price: $6.99

A luxurious cream-to-powder eyeshadow with a silky mousse texture and pure, intense colors. Quick drying for effortless application. 0.15 fl.oz. How to use: Using a brush or your fingertip, dab gently onto eyelid and blend as desired. Wear over eye primer for even more vivid, lasting results. Tighten cap to prevent product from drying out when not in use.

This is always the shade of eyeshadow I purchase when I'm trying out a new eyeshadow from any brand. I immediately gravitated towards Dauphine Truffle because it was a neutral not too dark not too light shade of brown with fine shimmer particles in it. Color payoff is very good and it doesn't take much product to cover your lid. Texture is very creamy, and has a slightly greasy texture compared to a MAC Paint Pot or Maybelline Color Tattoo. I plan to wear this all over my lid sometime this week to test how long it'll wear for. Overall, it has potential and if it wears just as long as the Maybelline Color Tattoo, it may just as well replace them since I think the texture is better!

Nail Polish in Taupe
Price: $5.99

Fashion-focused nail polish in a gorgeous array of inspiring colors and effects. Application is quick and easy – one coat of the high-gloss formula provides a rich, flawless finish. 0.27 fl.oz. How to use: Apply over base coat and finish with a top coat for extra protection and shine.

I'm going to be honest and say that despite choosing this color in person at the store, I'm not liking it. It looked completely different under the light of the stores (curse those lights!). Although I'm not loving the color, the formula is great. The polish comes with a wide brush so it covered the surface of my nails in only three strokes. Plus, the coats go on even and I get a full color opacity in two coats. I think for $5.99, it's a great buy for a polish with a great formula.

Concluding Remarks
I definitely think that H&M's beauty line is a serious contender to all high street makeup brands. They're all around the same price but the line also includes a huge range of bath and body products as well. H&M could seek to improve the packaging of the blushes and powder products as I think they are really flimsy, but the nail polish and cream eyeshadow packaging feels nice. I think it's a great launch for the brand, and they have definitely caught my eye in that I'll probably drop by the beauty section when I happen to be in an H&M that carries the beauty line to see if there is anything new worth trying.
