Beauty Discourse: Save or Splurge Beauty & Makeup Edition

Chances are if you're reading this post, you often have trouble knowing when and where to save and when to splurge when it comes to makeup and beauty items. While I don't claim to be an expert by any means, I can say that I feel like I've tried enough products to know where I would save or splurge with reasons why. Read on if you're curious about what I save on, splurge on, the why, and some product recommendations!

Makeup Brushes

To answer whether you should save or splurge on makeup brushes, I will end the debate with the mention of one brand - Real Techniques. Real Techniques makes amazing makeup brushes at an insanely affordable price. I cannot live without the Expert Face Brush! The Stippling Brush comes in close as the almost top favorite by the brand as well. That being said, I also adore splurging on Hakuhodo brushes as they just look and feel luxurious. But to put a caveat on that, Real Techniques also has the Bold Metals collection which is their higher end brush line and a "splurge" in that line will cost you maximum of $20 total dollars. In conclusion, you can definitely save rather than splurge in the makeup brush department.

Lip Products

I love both drugstore and higher end lip products. While I do have a pretty healthy collection of higher end lip products, I actually wear drugstore lip products more often on a daily basis. Some of my favorite drugstore lip products are the famous Lip Butters by Revlon. My absolute favorite berry lipstick is also a drugstore product - Color Whisper by Maybelline in Berry Ready (which I'm so upset about because the line seems to be discontinued!). For lip tints, I use exclusively Korean lip products which tend to be more on the affordable side (I'm currently obsessed with the Peripera Moist Ink lip tints which will be coming up in a future review soon). But, I can appreciate topping off an entire makeup look with a higher end lip product. My favorite high end lip products are the Dior Lip Addict Fluid Stick glosses particularly in the shade Ciel Rose, the YSL Vernis a Levres in the brighter richer shades (the nudes don't have as much color payoff), and the mini boy lipsticks by Tom Ford. So in conclusion, you can also save and not splurge in this department given that there are some great drugstore lip products available.

Oh my skincare is that tricky area where there is a great divide between the splurgers and the savers. Luckily for me I don't adhere to either (I know I took the easy way out). My philosophy when it comes to skincare is "buy what works for you" which could be drugstore or luxury items - it just depends on your individual skin composition. For me, I absolutely cannot live without some skincare products from the drugstore which include Effaclar Duo and moisturizers by Avene. The Glow Tonic by Pixi is also a drugstore skincare product favorite of mine. But I also have some high end products especially from Kiehls (Midnight Recovery Concentrate, Super-Multi Corrective Cream, and the Creamy Eye Treatment) that do absolute wonderful things for my skin. Whether you save or splurge in the skincare department should be dependent on what your skin reacts to and not the price of the skincare product itself.

Definitely splurge and I'll tell you the reasons why. First, for me the formulation and how well the foundation applies is the main quality I look for in foundations. Unfortunately, the higher end makeup brands usually release the products with the latest technology first before it trickles down to the drugstore brands. That's why I'm partial to the higher end foundations and almost always splurge on foundations. Secondly, and maybe it's just a matter of convenience, but I like to feel and test the product out before I even consider purchasing it. Testers are pretty much nonexistent in drugstores which is unfortunate. Thirdly, I also want to make sure that color is match for me and again, you will most surely find your match with an available tester which aren't available in drugstores. Some of my favorite foundations are the Amazonian Clay Full Coverage Airbrush foundation by Tarte, MAC 's Face and Body (which is on the affordable end at $27 for the smaller 1.7oz squeeze bottle), Giorgio Armani's Luminous Silk, and the Hera UV Mist Cushion Foundation.

What products do you personally save or splurge on?
