Product Review: Holika Holika Wine Therapy Sleeping Mask

I've been drinking a lot of wine lately - well, my skin has been anyway! Today and Wednesday I'll be reviewing two Korean skincare products that feature wine as the star skincare ingredient. So why wine? First, wine is essentially fermented grapes and if you've tried any of the fermented essences in your skincare routine, you'll already know that most fermented ingredients are great for your skin. Second, wine (but specifically the skin of the grapes) produces an compound called "resveratrol" that is known to contain tons of antioxidants which are great for anti-aging. First up from the two products that I'll be reviewing this week is the Wine Therapy Sleeping Mask in red wine by Holika Holika.

An anti wrinkle sleeping pack that makes your skin smooth and resilient with the shape memory moisture membrane of red wine.

Yes, I know, the packaging for this is just adorable! It's one of the reasons why I couldn't resist purchasing it. However, the scent isn't bad either. It smells exactly like wine and grapes but without the strong aroma of alcohol in it. Probably the most interesting quality about this sleeping mask is the texture. It's a "jelly" but it quickly regains its shape after you scoop out some product. Holika Holika calls this quality "shape memory moisture membrane" (whatever that means?), but I never really believe the claim that because the product itself retains its shape quickly that this quality will also translate to your skin. I imagine that scooping out the product with your fingers may be tricky due to the texture, but luckily the product comes with a small spatula that makes scooping out the product very easy. Application wise, it does feel nice and cooling on the skin but it can be a bit odd applying it at first because it still maintains its jelly form when you start spreading it over your skin. The great thing about this product is that you don't need much at all and I find myself scooping out more than I really need most of the time even when I'm being conservative. Within 10 minutes, it sinks completely into your skin and your face won't stick to your pillow like with some other sleeping masks I've tried. This is probably a better mask for those with combination to oily skin, those with drier skin may want to opt for the white wine mask which is more like a traditional face cream in texture. In the morning, my skin feels smoother but not oily.

Concluding Remarks

Although this was an impulse buy for me, I don't regret my purchase at all and am quite happy with it! I even think I may eventually purchase the white wine version since the red wine version is not as moisturizing. This is a great budget skincare buy and would probably make a very cute gift for a friend. It is available on Amazon for less than the suggested retail value and is even eligible for Prime shipping.
